In the nineteenth century, women often carried small bouquets of fragrant flowers in elegant holders. For example, when people went to a ball, it was common for the woman to receive a small bouquet of flowers from her attendant. The holder had a pin to secure the flowers and a chain with a ring that was put on the finger while dancing. Giving flowers was not only a charming gesture. The fragrant bouquets were also intended to cover up the stuffy air in the crowded and warm space during the party. The bouquet holders were often real jewelery, made of materials such as wood, ivory and silver. Some bouquet holders could be pinned on, others were specially designed for bridal bouquets.
