Sweet as sugar
Paris, 1959. Wearing a linen wedding dress in pink-and-white Vichy checks, French film star Brigitte Bardot marries her beloved Jacques Charrier. The doll-like dress, trimmed with broderie anglaise, was custom-designed by Jacques Esterel. In that moment, Bardot gave the traditional country check a seductive new twist. Since then, the iconic ‘BB check’ has led a fascinating double life. On one hand, it graces the summer collections of fashion houses like Chanel and Oscar de la Renta. On the other, the sugary-sweet motif remains a beloved staple in domestic settings – adorning tablecloths, curtains, lampshades, and little girls’ bedrooms.
