Elegance on the ice
The first curly skates appeared at the end of the sixteenth century. Local blacksmiths made the ice kates on commission, as a single pair or in a small series. Scattered throughout the Nethelands all kinds of small and larger ice skating factories arose. The ice skates came in many varieties: with long and short curls, narrow and wide curls. There were probably also regional differences. From the curl you could read the status of the ice skater: the higher and more complicated the curl, the more important his position in the village community! That curl looked graceful, but it did cause problems on the ice, because if both curls got entangled together, the skater would fall.
