Sweat cloth
Chef and baker uniforms consist of several recognizable elements, but perhaps the most iconic is the neckerchief. This square piece of fabric – often red, white, or featuring a traditional baker's check pattern – is worn around the neck. In the hot, bustling kitchens of the past, where wood-fired ovens were the norm, the cloth served a practical purpose: absorbing sweat. It was a hygienic solution, preventing perspiration from dripping into the food and helping to avoid colds caused by a sweaty neck. Hence its nickname: sweat cloth. While it also has a decorative role today, the neckerchief remains a practical and traditional part of the chef’s uniform.
