Anorak
Jackets
Windproof original
The anorak is no ordinary jacket, but a clever design with roots in Inuit culture. According to The Museum of America and the Sea, the first waterproof anoraks were handmade from whale or seal intestines to withstand the freezing temperatures of the Arctic. For added insulation, wearers would sometimes layer a second parka made from blubber on top. The anorak is pulled over the head like a sweater – no front zipper that could leak or buttons that might come loose. With its short, hip-length cut and fixed hood, this original outerwear piece has become a functional and timeless icon, from the polar ice to the city park.
