Alpaca, baby!
No, baby alpaca has nothing to do with cute young alpacas. The term refers to an extra fine alpaca quality. It is the wool from the first alpaca shearing. This is called baby wool and only the finest hairs are used. This results in a fiber that is even softer than normal alpaca wool, comparable to silk. Alpacas – a member of the llama family – are sheared once a year. The first shave yields between one and a half and two kilos of 'baby alpaca' fibres. In subsequent shaves, this is about three pounds. Major fashion houses have discovered the qualities of alpaca wool: the wool is found in a striking number of winter collections.
