Style icon Jane Birkin wouldn't go anywhere without her Portuguese fishing basket in the 1970s: dangling from one arm, stuffed with green apples at a street market or with reading material for the airport. There is no accessory that better typifies the singer and actress than that wicker basket with a lid as closure. She paired le panier with flared jeans and a simple white T-shirt. The story goes that she even once used the wicker basket to smuggle out the silverware from the fancy restaurant Maxims. Similar round baskets aren't hard to come by now that the iconic 'Birkin basket' is an Instagram hit. Several brands have it in their collection. The real connoisseur will of course go for a hand-braided example from the small Portuguese fishing village where Jane Birkin got her find.
