A dandy tradition
Shorter than a tie, narrower than a scarf: the ascot is a silk neckband with wider ends and a slimmer middle section. The name refers to Royal Ascot, the famous horse racing event in Britain, where it became tradition in the 19th century for stylish gentlemen – the so-called dandies – to wear this type of neckwear. An ascot is loosely tied under the open collar of a shirt, worn instead of a traditional tie. It is a more informal style of neckwear, intended for daytime use. Hence the English term day cravat – an accessory that exudes effortless elegance.
