Wool of the gods
Alpacas are close relatives of the llamas and live in South America. Their wool is softer than soft, very strong and dirt and water repellent. Already in ancient times, alpaca wool was a very valuable material that the Incas called 'wool of the gods'. At the time, it was mainly reserved for the royal family. In the mid-nineteenth century, the English textile manufacturer Sir Titus Salt discovered the quality of alpaca wool. Queen Victoria wore dresses made of alpaca wool and promoted this type of wool. There are two types of alpacas: huacayas have a slightly curly coat and suri's have long thick locks. Alpaca wool is available in beautiful natural shades, so that dyeing is often not necessary.
