The evening bag is an essential accessory for a tight evening dress. There is of course no room for pockets in such a close-fitting creation. Luxury evening bags are often matched with the dress and the shoes. The first evening bags of the thirteenth century were like purses hanging loosely from a belt, often composed of leftover embroidered pieces of wall hangings and ecclesiastical robes. Over the years, evening bags have been strongly influenced by the fashion image and changing customs. In the Roaring Twenties, enchanting beaded bags with moving fringes were an extension of the dress. They often include opera glasses, a ball book and fan. Evening bags with special shapes were popular in the 1950s and 1960s.
