Skating long strokes
A skating trip you make on Norwegian speed skates. This type of skate was first used on February 10, 1954. Before that, in the Netherlands skating was mainly done on Frisian wooden skates. Gerard Maarse and Arne Johhansson used the high steel skates for the first time – and they were much faster than their opponents! From that moment on, the Norwegian speed skate was the new competition skate and they replaced the Frisian skates. Norwegian speed skates have straight irons with shoes mounted on them. It takes some practice and wavering, but once you get the hang of it, it is blissful. The long irons allow you to make long strokes on the ice and achieve a goed speed. Just what you need to ride long distances.
