Shuffling on tennis rackets
Snowshoes look like large tennis rackets, but without the handle. The size varies from 45 centimeters to 1.5 meters. These oval wooden frames are strung with straps and are attached to the feet. Because the body weight is distributed over a larger surface than with a normal shoe, the wearer does not sink into the snow field. Native people of North America made snowshoes by forming a wooden frame, with a strong net of woven hide or sinew in the center. The frames were tied to their boots with leather straps. Fortunately, they don't often need snowshoes: in winter they often travel across the frozen sea where the snow is not deep enough to sink into.
