Doppio nastro
In the eighteenth century, the English Admiral Nelson designed a straw summer hat that protects sailors from the sun. Over time, this matelot becomes part of the summer uniform worn by pupils at English boarding schools. You will also come across this stiffly braided model in Italy. Gondoliers in Venice decorate the 'boatman's hat' with a doppio nastro (double-sided band), or rib ribbon in red and navy blue. Although the matelot was originally worn by men, women also adopted the hat style. Coco Chanel, who once started as a milliner, is known to be one of her favorite hats. This type of hat should preferably be worn a little edgy, to the front or diagonally on the head.
